font-weight: bold;"> Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine that uses the medicinal properties of the essential oils of plants and herbs.

French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy in 1937, the use of plant essential oils dates back to the ancient times in Egypt, Italy, India, and China. Now it is integrated into holistic treatments, and is used in spa treatments and products such as candles, massage oil, and other relaxation products.

What is Aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy with the addition of one or more scented plant oils called essential oils to address specific needs. Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to stress-related conditions or conditions with an emotional component.

Aromatherapy massage Works:

When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones.

Massage needed when there is:

1) Stress and stress-related conditions such as insomnia
2) Headache
3) Digestive disorders
4) Back Pain
5) Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

For more details visit http://www.albertamassagetraining.com

Types of Massage Therapy

Will it be just right? How can it set the mood? What's the best pressure per square inch when 1972 Motown (or 1772 Mozart) is played at level three on the in-home stereo?

Whoa, people. It's supposed to be ... fun.

But Rekha Von Ehren, a massage therapist at Bellagio Spa in Newport Beach, Calif., says a lover's massage doesn't feel great because of fancy technique or position. Instead, she says, it's all about touch. So load Al Green's "Greatest Hits" into the iPod and get the candles a-flickering. Here are some tips to giving your valentine the sensation of relaxation:

1. Make sure the massage oil or lotion is warm. You can warm lotion by rubbing it between the palms of your hands.

2. Be inconsistent. Touch your partner with your fingertips, knuckles, elbows, the full palm and the heel of your palm. Likewise, while touching, use a variety of strokes - from deep rubbing and kneading to tickling and light scratching. And feel free to lean in close, using your body weight to add force.

3. Kissing is considered a natural part of massage. According to Chinese reflexology, arousal is tied to being touched on the spot just above the lip and the nose.

4. The brain, said to control our sexual impulses, can make or break potentially steamy moments. Temples, and the point just between the brows, are unsexy tension cesspools. So lay your lover's head in your lap, rub these spots in a circular motion and let the endorphins flow.

5. When the chemistry is right, nibbling on, rubbing or kissing ears can trigger stimulative and sedative reactions.

6. Run your fingers through your partner's hair and pull gently to stimulate the scalp.

7. Movements should always go toward the heart. So if you want to reach your lover's thighs, start at the toes and move your way up.

8. Reflexology also says hands and feet are microcosms of the body. When tenderly caressed, hands and feet can signal the interior of the body. So, in theory, you can touch a person's heart by massaging the ball of the left foot, or tap into your beloved's brain by massaging the big toes.

9. Hands, full of nerve endings, are incredibly sensitive. So massage each finger along the joint to the tip with your fingertips or, perhaps, lips and mouth.

Article source :- Valentine's Day massages all about the right touch

Regulation of Massage Therapists Threatens Compliance with the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT)

Alberta is currently considering the regulationof massage therapists. Implementation of regulation that makes it moredifficult for massage therapists to work in their chosen occupation anywherein Canada will threaten compliance with the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT). Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canada's Premiers and Territorial Leaders signed the AIT at the recent First Ministers' Meeting on the economy.

The Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC), which represents over72% of massage therapists in Alberta, has made a formal application to theAlberta government to honour the AIT and implement regulation of massagetherapists under the Multi-Category Model for Massage (MCM).

The proposed MCM regulatory model recognizes the diversity of massagetherapy training across all Canadian provinces and provides the opportunityfor massage therapists to move from one jurisdiction to another by providingmultiple points of entry to practice.

Under the MCM, massage therapists from other jurisdictions could undergoa competency assessment and be placed in a practice category according totheir capabilities.

Only three provinces in Canada currently regulate massage therapists(B.C., Ontario, Newfoundland & Labrador). Working with shiatsu master Tetsuro Saito, Moore learned to use finger and palm pressure in an effort to restore balance in the natural flow of energy known as "qi" (pronounced "chee") throughout the body.

Moore also learned that doing the work, particularly on her larger and more muscular clients, took a toll on her body. So, several years ago she began training in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, which melds elements of the ancient practice of ashiatsu - or "foot pressure" - massage with Western techniques. The key is the use of a raised table and overhead bars to support the therapist's weight.

"It's much more effective for my clients to use my body weight and my foot, which is much larger than my hand, to apply just the right amount of pressure," said Moore, who weighs 122 pounds. "It's also a lot easier on me."

Ruthie Piper Hardee developed the bar therapy regimen and is credited with bringing this rapidly growing form of massage into the US mainstream. "You could say it's a barefoot bonanza that's really sweeping the country," Hardee, 52, said in a telephone interview from her Denver office. Since the 1990s, Hardee's program has trained nearly 4,000 practitioners in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, including Moore, who is certified in advanced levels.

Those therapists use wooden bars bolted into the ceiling or a portable apparatus with overhead bars to maneuver above their clients and to support a portion of their body weight as they vary the amount of pressure they apply with one foot, or sometimes both feet. That combination helps create "the longest stroke ever and the most luxurious massage on the planet," according to Hardee.

I was eager to find out whether Moore could back up that claim. Soon after arriving at her small but comfortable studio for my 90-minute session, I was lying face down under the covers on the massage table, which was slightly wider than normal to accommodate Moore's footwork. On the floor under the face cushion that cradled my head, she mixed some Japanese mint oil with hot water and the resulting fragrant steam brought my sinuses alive.

article source :- Raising the bar on massage therapy

What is Swedish massage therapy

Many of us have seen movie clips of people getting massages but unless you've experienced an actual massage session you may be confused about what a massage actually is. Western massage is usually based on the Swedish massage techniques.

With it's long relaxing strokes and gentle rhythm, Swedish Massage is the most popular in the United States. So what is Swedish massage? Classic Swedish massage involves manipulation of the body's soft tissues - muscles, ligaments and lymphatic system.

There are five basic techniques used during Swedish massage; effleurage or stroking; petrissage or kneading; tapotement or percussion; friction; and vibration. Usually these techniques and strokes are used over the full body during an hour-long massage session that covers the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, hands, feet and head.

Most sessions last for an hour, although abbreviated 30-minute sessions are popular for working on specific areas of the body. If more time is desired, or there are areas of severe tension in the body, many practitioners will offer extended sessions as well. I personally feel like if I am going to set aside time to get a massage I want to make sure I take advantage of the opportunity and try to get a longer session scheduled.

The documented benefits of massage therapy include relaxing and strengthening tight muscles, improving circulation of blood and lymph, increasing joint mobility, helping to promote healthy skin, and helping to decrease the negative effects of stress.

Article source :- What is Swedish massage therapy

Magnetic Pain Therapy: One Study Shows Promise For Osteoarthritis

Magnetic pain therapy has introduced a few very interesting studies that should be taken seriously. These studies have shown that there may be more to magnetic pain therapy then meets the eye. In other words, that magnetic therapy may actually help to alleviate pain if applied to different parts of the body.

For starters, it is certainly easy to look at something like magnetic therapy and decide it is all just an "alternative medicine" ploy so that someone can get rich fast while you continue to suffer with chronic pain. This is certainly not a bad assumption because there are many magnetic therapy vendors who would like to do nothing more than separate you from your money. However, it is important for anyone who suffers from chronic pain to know the entire story, and that is exactly what this article is all about. We will focus on one such magnetic therapy study that attempts to shed some light on the interesting developments in magnetic pain therapy.

The Magnetic Pain Therapy Study

For the magnetic therapy study, we will discuss a randomized controlled trial at the Peninsula Medical School where magnetic bracelets were used in an attempt to show that magnetic therapy may relieve pain in osteoarthritis of the hips and knees. These was done with your typical real magnets and placebo magnets in a trial that took 194 men and women aged 45 to 80 years who suffered from osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.

What the 194 men and women were told to do was wear a standard strength static bipolar magnetic bracelet, a weak magnetic bracelet, or a non-magnetic bracelet for 12 weeks. Some of the men and women in the magnetic pain therapy study wore the standard strength magnetic bracelet, some wore the weak magnetic bracelet and others wore the "dummy" bracelet.

The results are at the very least uplifting for magnetic pain therapy enthusiasts. The results showed that for pain from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, there was a decrease when wearing magnetic bracelets, however there is a catch. In this case, it is undetermined whether the decrease in pain was due to the magnetic pain therapy bracelets, or simply due to placebo effects. This is interesting to me because the men and women in the study were all under the assumption that they had on the strongest magnetic bracelets, but no matter, the results certainly did not imply that magnetic pain therapy is a complete sham. Certainly with studies like this, it must suggest at the very least that magnetic therapy may help certain people with certain health issues. How much pain therapy, and in what types of pain have yet to be determined.

The Magnetic Pain Therapy Conclusion

So it is true that this study does not prove once and for all that magnetic therapy is going to alleviate all of your chronic pain be that osteoarthritis pain or otherwise. But at the same time, this study does provides some evidence to suggest that there may be more to magnets then meet the eye. In other words. maybe magnetic fields really do something to help alleviate chronic pain. Of course there are more layers to peel before we get to the bottom of the exact usefulness of magnetic therapy as a chronic pain therapy solution, but we must consider the possibility that magnetic therapy may have a place among other credible pain therapy solutions.

Article Source :- Magnetic Pain Therapy: One Study Shows Promise For Osteoarthritis

Alberta’s Wellness center

Alberta’s one of a variety of wellness center characteristic 7 therapeutic studios, an infrared sauna, vigorous coffee and smoothie bar, storefront, classes, workshops and a gorgeous, fully selected seminar room. In realism, the majority of those performing spa treatments is estheticians and massage therapists, each requiring a separate license.

Many of these service providers are drawn to a career in the massage business by what they perceive as a kinder, gentler vocation. These usually included licensing programs for estheticians, massage therapists and cosmetologists each of which requisite a set number of clock hours to measure competency.

As the intersect between medical and esthetic curing continues to haze, and the invasion of physicians, nurses, massage therapist, acupuncturists, nutritionists and other allied health professionals penetrate the business those entering such training today are just as likely to have a college degree as they are a high school diploma. This situation has many lament for rules and regulations to implement stricter professional boundaries and promote augmented education.

Like estheticians, massage therapists are also determined to raise standards and promote national mobility. The clash is to obtain state licensure has been one of their biggest obstacles, but with many states now retaining a divide massage therapy licensing, development is being made. Yet, the numeral of hours required to attain licensure can range from three hundred to one thousand hours.

National standards are another blazing concern for massage therapists. Till date, the merely national certification agency for massage therapists in US is the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB). The NCBTMB is also accountable for setting up the National Certification Exam (NCE) for massage therapists, which requires five hundred hours of training as a marker. Although the exam commenced as a voluntary way to launch credentials, it has really become a obligation for state licensure. As this emerge to be a stride toward national mobility, it is significant to observe that it does not truly guarantee reciprocity.

Article Source :-Massage therapy certification and a profession
